Year 5 Autumn Term Curriculum Overview 2019

How can we help the Potter to mould the Clay?

Who is the Potter? Who could the clay be? How can they be moulded?

Throughout the autumn term, we will be marking the 30th anniversary of Wallace and Gromit’s ‘A Grand Day Out.’ We will explore the work of Nick Park and the advances that he managed to make in technology with stop motion animation. Year 5 will use various computing devices to investigate how recording can take place alongside the influence of sound and animation. The films created by Nick Park involving Wallace and Gromit will be looked at to unpick the imagination, creativity and flair required to unveil a captivating film. Our science will focus on Earth and space and will involve many aspects of the solar system.

There will be numerous writing opportunities which will include a biography, a character profile, a film narrative, postcard writing, explanation texts as well as storyboarding the final outcomes. We will become sketch designers, pop art painters, cookie bakers, model makers, scenery creators and film producers throughout this project. The importance of music within film will also be explored and the children will make their own music using computerised methods as well as the instruments themselves.

A significant aspect to our project surrounds the liturgical year and the influence that Our Father and his Son have on our daily lives. We will intertwine the RE curriculum within our project which will involve the use of an expert to support the children in producing prayer focus candle stands out of clay to practise their modelling capabilities. Our aspirations will be discussed and linked with how we are moulded, as clay, to be the very best version of ourselves that we can be. Year 5’s learning will culminate in the production of a stop motion animation combining clay models and all of the skills learnt linked to animation which will tell a very special story.

It will be a cracking adventure!
